His respect and admiration for his fellow war-arena doctors is unbounded and sincere.ĭavid Nott treats the subject with the seriousness it deserves but there is one brief moment of levity when he returns to normal UK clinic life straight after the hell of Aleppo and is consulted by a patient with relatively trivial vascular problems. His political and diplomatic skills, deployed with colleagues and bureaucrats, are an essential part of his story and are recorded here modestly and prosaicly. The plight of various patients, especially children, is his prime concern, but we get a clear insight into his own psychological trauma's course and causes. He is modest without adopting false modesty. The author is candid about his own involvement in various theatres of war and medicine without boasting. All in all, this book was meant to be read by the man in the street: the prose, explanations, descriptions and opinions are all tailored to that end. ![]() When the technical stuff comes it is in easy to understand tems acronyms are kept to a minimum and come with an explanation. The book is well written and full consideration is given to the limits of the lay readers' expertise. ![]() Because a man excels in one field does not mean his is skilled in others, so I came to this book with cautious interest. I became aware of war/disaster surgeon David Nott a couple of years ago when I heard his intensely moving 45 minutes on Desert Island Discs. ![]()
